We hit the road fairly early. It was cool and overcast, and we ran into occasional light rain. I discovered, to my irritation, that my heated grips didn't work. They were installed in late May by the Harley dealership.

We stopped for breakfast in Gold Beach. Then we proceeded south toward Crescent City, CA and the Redwoods. We ran into road destruction and had to take a detour through Carpenterville, OR.

We stopped to ride old 101 north to the Big Tree in Prairie Creek Redwood State Park, or Redwood National Park depending on the map view. From there we went south and picked up California State route 299 between Calville and Arcata. We stopped at an overlook several miles west of Willow Creek. Then we rode to Willow Creek, gassed up, and got back on the road. We ran into a parking lot near Delloma, and after about 2 hours the officials decided to close the road for the day so the firefighters could use it safely. We doubled back to Willow Creek, got a cabin at Gambi Hill, and set out to get dinner. Unfortunately, I took a wrong turn and ended up trying to U-turn on a hill. I tipped over and broke two ribs - #6 and #7.
