Friday, August 18, 2006 - Stewartsville,
MO to Keokuk, IA
After examining our bedrolls for hitchhiking cockroaches, we packed up and
headed east on US 36. We went to Cameron and had breakfast. I bought a pair of
headphones for my Zen at a Radio Shack. The guys from Texas at the Whitewood SD
house told me about the headphones. They're great for motorcycling. We gassed up
and continued east on US 36 to Hannibal.
We visited the Mark Twain House and rode southward on Missouri State Route
79. We pulled over at Victor's Point Roadside Park and had a soda.
We took a closer look at one of the locks on the Mississippi; I think it was
at Clarksville. We continued south to I-70. We jumped over to Missouri Statr
Route 370, over to I-270, to US 67, across the river to Alton, IL. From there we
rode north along the river on Illinois State Route 100.
At Kampsville we took Illinois State Route 96 along the river. We stopped at
a bar in Hamilton, then rode back across the Mississippi to Keokuk, IA and US
218. We decided to get a motel room. The owners of the first place we stopped at
(Chief Motel) didn't seem to like bikers - "No vacancy". We ended up at an
Econolodge.
