We got rolling relatively early in the morning. We went around Garden City to the north. We picked up Kansas State Route 156 and followed it east. We started getting nervous because each dot on the map turned out not to have a gas station. We finally found a gas station at Great Bend. Ironically, it was Casey's.
After gas and a drink, we took 156 up to I70 exit 225 and headed east toward Salina. We got off at exit 252 and got a bite to eat at a Mexican restaurant inside a motel. Casey had a big Margarita, after which he considered calling it a day. We weren't done yet, though.
We got back on I70 East and headed toward Topeka. We stopped at a rest area (39.06N, 96.12W) between exits 335 and 338. Nice view. We got off at exit 366, and picked up Kansas State Route 4 north. We got separated when Casey ran low on fuel and stopped behind me. I filled up at Rock Creek.
We stopped again in Atchinson and got a map and a pop, then headed over the Missouri River on US 59. We traveled northerly to St. Joseph, and turned east on US 36. We found a rest area on the north side of the highway. There was a pavilion with a roof over it, and some picnic tables on it. Turns out that bird crap drew in the bugs (roaches) and they scattered when the flashlight came on. Casey slept on a picnic table north of the pavilion. I took my chances.
