Tuesday, August 15, 2006 - Vernal, UT to Durango, CO
We hit the road in the morning after burning some coffee. We got back on US
191 south. We went through a canyon pass south of Duchesne, and merged with US 6
at Helper. I think we went by a power plant there. We stopped for breakfast and
gas somewhere near Price, or maybe Wellington. We continued south on US 191 to
the junction of I-70, by Green River (exit 156). From there we followed both
routes about 24 miles to a rest area just west of exit 180. We watched some
geckos running around, enjoyed an adult beverage and headed south again to Moab.
We fueled up in Moab, then continued south to Monticello. We stopped
there, got a bite and a drink, filled up, and hit the road again. We turned left
(east) onto Utah Stat Route 262, and ended up riding to a gas station in the
middle of the Navajo reservation in a place called Montezuma Creek. The school
was just letting out, and the checkout line was a little busy.
We proceeded south on Red Mesa Road, which, as luck would have it, was under
construction. After a nice but prolonged conversation with the flag lady, we
continued south to Red Mesa, AZ, where we turned east on US 160. We crossed into
New Mexico and turned onto NM Route 597, where we had the opportunity to pay
$3.00 each to see the four corners USGS marker and buy some fry bread and iced
tea.
We went back out to US 160, turned east, and rode up to Cortez, CO. We
stopped at the chamber of commerce and picked up a couple of maps, then headed
east on US 160 to a motel on the west side of Durango, where we stayed the
night. We picked up a 12-pack and ordered pizza.
